Beruwala Beach
About Beruwala
Beruwala is one of Sri Lanka's oldest resort towns, a busy historic port on the southwest coast about 60 km south of Colombo. Its long, golden-sand beach runs south of town, backed by a strip of mid-range and top-end hotels that grew up here as part of the pioneering package-tour zone shared with neighbouring Bentota. The shore is anchored by the Kechimalai Mosque, one of the island's oldest, perched on the rocky headland where Arab traders are said to have first landed, while Barberyn Island's 1889 lighthouse sits just offshore. The water can be rough for casual swimming, and the better bathing stretches lie south of town. Daily life revolves around fishing: the harbour's dawn fish market trades sharks and tuna before sunrise. It suits travellers who want history, local food and a working-coast atmosphere more than a pristine resort beach.

Reviews
Beruwala is best for travellers who enjoy a lively, historic coastal town rather than a pristine resort beach: the mosque and lighthouse, the fish and gem markets, and a scruffy working-coast beach all in one. Come November to April and head south of town for calmer swimming. The sunset view from Kechimalai Mosque over the bay and offshore lighthouse is the one image you will keep.
