About Marawila

Marawila is a quiet beach resort strip on the west coast about 65 km north of Colombo, between Negombo and Chilaw. A long, flat stretch of sand backed by coconut palms runs along the shore, and development is low-rise: a handful of beachfront hotels and guesthouses set among village houses and small farms. The surrounding district is known for coastal aquaculture, with crab and shrimp farming in the lagoons and ponds behind the shore, and fishing is the main local livelihood. The sea here is known for being calm in the dry season, which makes the beach popular with families and slower travellers who want a relaxed, uncommercialised holiday. Beyond the sand, Marawila offers a glimpse of a working coastal district with none of the crowds of Negombo to the south.

Marawila suits travellers who want a genuinely quiet, low-key beach holiday with calm water and little commercialisation, especially families and slow travellers. Stay in one of the beachfront hotels in the November-April dry season, and treat the long empty sand and the surrounding lagoon-and-farm country as the attractions.
