About Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is the south coast's original tourist hub — a long golden beach backed by guesthouses, restaurants and a famous nightlife strip. The coral sanctuary just offshore offers some of the island's easiest shore snorkeling, and sea turtles are a daily sight.

Inside the coral sanctuary the water is calm, but strong currents occur outside the reef and on open stretches, where police lifeguards have rescued swimmers at Pannamgoda and Narigama beaches. Swim near shore, heed warnings and avoid the open sea during the monsoon (roughly May-October).

Yes - the coral sanctuary begins a short swim from the main beach and is the most accessible reef snorkelling on the south-west coast. Glass-bottom boats also operate for non-swimmers. Best visibility is in the calm season, roughly November to April.

Inside the reef the water is calm; outside the reef the currents are stronger.

November to April, with December to March the reliable core. During the south-west monsoon the sea is rough, snorkelling is often impossible and much of the town goes quiet.
