Alankuda is the Kalpitiya peninsula's main beach base: a several-kilometre stretch of sand on the Indian Ocean side, fronting the fishing village that shares its name. A line of giant wind turbines marches along the shore, a reminder of how hard the wind blows here - and the reason Kalpitiya is Sri Lanka's best-known kitesurfing destination. Across the dunes lies the flat, shallow Kalpitiya lagoon where most beginners learn to ride, with kite schools running lessons and rescue boats through the season. Spinner dolphins gather offshore between November and April, when dawn boat trips leave from this stretch of coast, and divers head for the Bar Reef marine sanctuary roughly 15-20 km offshore. Accommodation runs to rustic eco-lodges and beachfront guesthouses rather than big resorts; the 17th-century Dutch Fort and the fishing harbour are a short drive north in Kalpitiya town.
