About Kalutara

Kalutara is a busy coastal town built where the Kalu Ganga (Black River) meets the sea, on the Galle Road south of Colombo. The town beach, known as Calido Beach, is a lively, working stretch of golden sand at the river mouth, and the view is dominated by the gleaming white Kalutara Chaitya - one of the few hollow stupas in the world - rising from a headland above the confluence. The temple site, which also holds a sacred Bo tree, is the town's defining landmark, and the river is the other big draw: boat trips explore the Kalu Ganga and its islands, while the remains of a Portuguese-era fort speak to the town's colonial past. The beach has suffered erosion near the river mouth and the water there can be rough, so Kalutara rewards sightseers and day-trippers more than swimmers.

  • The Kalutara Chaitya, a rare hollow stupa, on the headland above the river mouth
  • Sacred Kalutara Bodhiya - one of Sri Lanka's venerated Bo trees
  • Lively local beach (Calido Beach) where the Kalu Ganga meets the sea
  • Boat trips and cruises on the Kalu Ganga and its islands
  • Remains of the Portuguese-built Kalutara Fort
  • Rough-and-ready town energy, busy with locals and day-trippers

Kalutara is best treated as a cultural day trip rather than a swimming beach: the hollow Chaitya stupa, the sacred Bo tree and the Kalu Ganga boat rides are genuinely memorable, while the beach itself is rougher and more eroded at the river mouth. Come in the dry season, visit the stupa late in the day, and save swimming for Wadduwa or Waskaduwa a few minutes up the coast.

Travel tips

10
See the stupa · 3 days ago
Visit the Kalutara Chaitya and Bodhiya at the river mouth - the white hollow stupa is most striking in late-afternoon light, with views over the beach and estuary.
10
Take a river trip · 3 days ago
Boat trips on the Kalu Ganga are a popular way to see the river, its islands and the mangroves; operators and tours run from Kalutara.
10
Beach caution · 3 days ago
Avoid swimming right at the river mouth, where currents are strongest and the sandbar shifts; check local conditions before entering the water.
10
Pair with a beach · 3 days ago
For swimming, continue a few kilometres to Wadduwa or Waskaduwa, whose beaches are calmer than the exposed town beach at Kalutara.

FAQ

It is one of the few hollow stupas in the world - visitors can stand inside it - and it rises above the Kalu Ganga river mouth beside a sacred Bo tree on the same temple site.
The beach meets the river at the Kalu Ganga mouth, where currents and waves can be strong and reviews describe rough conditions; it is better suited to walking and sightseeing, with any swimming done with care away from the river mouth.
Kalutara is on the A2 Galle Road and the coastal railway line, so both buses and trains run regularly from Colombo; the beach, temple and river are close together on foot.
