About Maggona

Maggona is a small, quiet beach village on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, roughly between Beruwala and Kalutara and about 55 km south of Colombo. Its beach runs for about two kilometres as a gently shelving, beige-sand strand backed by palms, with a soft slope into turquoise water. Sources describe the village as untouched by mass tourism: no large resort complexes, mostly local visitors and fishing life, and a handful of guesthouses and villas rather than a hotel strip. Facilities are simple - changing rooms, showers and local restaurants near the shore. The area sits on Sri Lanka's turtle coast: Olive Ridley turtles are recorded nesting on these beaches, and turtle hatcheries and rescue centres lie a short drive away. November to February brings the clearest blue water.

Maggona is for travellers who want a genuine, low-key slice of Sri Lankan coastal life rather than a resort scene - a palm-backed village beach with simple facilities and mostly local visitors. Go November to February for clear blue water, and use it as a base for the turtle hatcheries and the livelier sights of Kalutara, Bentota and Beruwala. The near-empty two-kilometre walk of sand is the memory that stays.
