Paiyagala (often spelled Payagala) is a long, quiet, palm-shaded beach roughly 48 km south of Colombo, forming the southern end of the same golden shoreline that runs up through Kalutara to Waskaduwa. The beach sits below the Galle Road between Kalutara and Beruwala, near the little town of Maggona, and sees far fewer visitors than the resort strips to the north and south. It is a place of slow rhythms - fishermen and local families during the day, long sunset walks in the evening, and a scattering of guesthouses and beach villas such as Thoduwawa Beach Villa and Infinity of Sri Lanka for overnight stays. Village life, including traditional fish-preserve (jaadi) making, carries on right behind the sand. It suits travellers who want a genuinely low-key, local beach stay rather than facilities and nightlife.
