Palavi railway station on the Puttalam line is the main arrival point for the peninsula

About Palavi

Palavi is the gateway town at the base of the Kalpitiya peninsula and the nearest railway stop on the Puttalam line for the whole Kalpitiya coast. Around it the landscape is flat lagoon, salt pan and mangrove; the kite lagoons at Kappalady, about 20 km south of Kalpitiya town, offer shallow, flat water that has made this corner of the peninsula a fixture of Sri Lanka's kite-surfing scene, with a reef about a kilometre off the beach. Across the road on the Indian Ocean side the shoreline is exposed and windswept, with rough seas through the May-to-October monsoon and few facilities of any kind. Development is minimal: a handful of lagoon-side kite resorts, fishing villages and very limited restaurants, so most visitors book full board. Palavi suits self-sufficient kitesurfers and travellers crossing the peninsula by train rather than anyone looking for a classic beach holiday.

  • Nearest railway station (Puttalam line) for the Kalpitiya coast
  • Kappalady kite lagoons about 20 km south of Kalpitiya town - flat, shallow water
  • Strong SW wind Jun-Sep (20-26 knots average) with near-daily kiteable conditions
  • Reef about 1 km off the beach opposite Kappalady village
  • Exposed, windswept ocean shoreline with rough monsoon seas
  • Very sparse development - lagoon-side kite resorts and fishing villages only

Palavi is a base camp rather than a beach destination - a train stop, a kite lagoon and a rough ocean coast for self-sufficient travellers. Come in the November-April calm season unless you are chasing the June-September kite wind, and arrive with a full-board resort booked.

FAQ

By train to Palavi station on the Puttalam line, then a 3-wheeler; or by bus to Palakuda Junction and a short 3-wheeler ride.
June-September brings the strongest SW winds (20-26 knots average) and near-daily kiteable conditions; winter (Dec-Mar) is lighter at around 14-20 knots.
Not really - it is fishing villages, lagoon, reef and open sea; most visitors come for kite lessons and safaris and stay at full-board lagoon resorts.
