About Sethawadiya

Sethawadiya sits low on the Kalpitiya peninsula, where the flat kite lagoons crowd against the open Indian Ocean. On the lagoon side the area is known for its kitesurfing scene: small resorts and eco-lodges such as Villa Sethawadi and Sethawadiya Dolphin View stand between salt pans and palm groves, with boats ferrying riders across to the beach. On the ocean side the beach is exposed, wild and almost always windy, with little in the way of development. The setting is stark - salt flats, mangroves and a scattering of fishermen's houses - with Kalpitiya town and its Dutch Fort a drive up the peninsula road. Access is part of the adventure: guest reviews describe the last stretch of road as rough enough that a tuk-tuk is the better option. This is a beach for kitesurfers, wind-seekers and travellers who prize emptiness over comfort.

  • Wild, exposed ocean beach on the lower Kalpitiya peninsula
  • Lagoon-side kitesurf centres with boat shuttles across to the beach
  • Remote setting between salt pans and palm groves
  • Eco-lodges: Villa Sethawadi Hotel & Kitesurf Centre, Sethawadiya Dolphin View Eco Lodge
  • Strong, near-constant wind - one of the windiest corners of the peninsula
  • Very few facilities - visitors stay and eat at their lodge
  • Rough final approach road - tuk-tuk recommended by guest reviews

Sethawadiya is the wildest edge of the Kalpitiya kite scene - wind, salt flats and almost nothing else between the lagoon and the open sea. Come with a kite centre or eco-lodge booked, a tuk-tuk mindset, and low expectations for amenities; the emptiness and the wind are the point.

FAQ

Follow the Palavi-Kalpitiya road south; the final stretch is rough, and guest reviews recommend a tuk-tuk rather than a car for the last part.
Both - the kitesurf centres sit on the lagoon side with boats crossing to the beach, while the ocean side is exposed, wild and windy.
Very few - most visitors eat at their eco-lodge or resort, so plan meals in advance.
