Sethawadiya sits low on the Kalpitiya peninsula, where the flat kite lagoons crowd against the open Indian Ocean. On the ocean side the beach is exposed, wild and almost always windy, with little in the way of development. The setting is stark - salt flats, mangroves and a scattering of fishermen's houses - with Kalpitiya town and its Dutch Fort a drive up the peninsula road.
