Best Beaches for Surfing in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka runs on two surf seasons, split by coast.

East coast — May to October. Arugam Bay is the island's premier break: Main Point is a world-class right-hand reef point for intermediate-to-advanced surfers, while Baby Point and Peanut Farm nearby suit beginners and casual swimmers. This is the most consistent swell window in the country.

South coast — November to April. Weligama's wide, gentle bay is the best place on the island to learn — small, forgiving waves and long-established surf schools. Midigama, just down the coast, has punchier reef breaks (Plantations, Lazy Left) for those ready to step up, and Ahangama and Kabalana round out the south coast's surf stretch.

Whichever coast you pick, plan around the season — the swell (and the crowd) follows the monsoon.
