South Coast: A 7-Day Itinerary
A week is enough to see the best of the south coast without rushing.
Days 1–2 — Unawatuna. Base yourself here for easy swimming inside the reef, a short walk to Jungle Beach, and Galle Fort just up the coast for a half-day of café-hopping and rampart walks.
Days 3–4 — Mirissa. Whale watching leaves early from Mirissa Harbour (book the day before), and Coconut Tree Hill is unmissable at sunset. Weligama is a 15-minute detour if you want a surf lesson.
Days 5–6 — Hiriketiya or Dickwella. Trade the busier towns for Hiriketiya's horseshoe bay — smaller, quieter, and full of good cafés.
Day 7 — Tangalle. Finish on a long, quiet beach, with a night-time turtle watch at Rekawa a short drive away.
All of it runs November–April, the south coast's dry season — outside that window, expect rougher seas and more rain.
