Ahangama Beach
About Ahangama
Ahangama is a relaxed coastal town about 18 km east of Galle on the A2 highway, with golden sand facing the Indian Ocean and a working local character that has recently gained a stylish surf-cafe scene. The town is famous for its stilt fishermen, who perch on single wooden poles in the shallows - a practice now largely staged for visitors. Surf is the main draw: the Ahangama area is home to some of Sri Lanka's most consistent waves, from a soft sandy beach break to the forgiving Marshmallows reef and, just along the coast, the powerful reef break known as The Rock at Kabalana. Colonial-era buildings house surf shops, the Colombo-Matara railway runs close behind the beach, and the Kathaluwa temple with its 19th-century Kandyan murals lies a couple of kilometres west. Best suited to surfers and travellers who want an authentic, low-key south-coast town.

Reviews
Ahangama delivers the most authentic, least polished stretch of the surf belt: stilt fishermen at dawn, trains rattling past the beach and consistent reef waves a short paddle out. Best for surfers and slow travellers between November and April - and worth knowing that the water is for surfers, not bathers.
