Ahungalla Beach
About Ahungalla
Ahungalla is a quiet village beach between Bentota and Balapitiya, its sand fronting a calm, uncrowded sea. The town's landmark is the Heritance Ahungalla, opened in 1981 as the Triton Hotel, Sri Lanka's first five-star beach resort, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, which still anchors the shoreline with its low, tropical-modern architecture. Away from the hotel, the beach is used mainly by locals and day visitors: fishing boats, long walks and sunsets. The Victor Hasselblad Sea Turtle Research and Conservation Centre operates nearby, and the Madu Ganga estuary at Balapitiya is minutes south, making Ahungalla a calm base with a famous hotel, a gentle beach and the lagoon safari on the doorstep.

Reviews
Ahungalla is the quiet, grown-up stop on this coast - a calm beach, a Bawa-designed heritage hotel and easy access to the Madu Ganga. Best in Nov-Apr; the hotel's architecture and the lagoon safari are the standouts.
