If you surf, this is the place. Main Point is world-class, the village is wonderfully relaxed, and the dry season (May–Oct) delivers consistent swell. Non-surfers still love the vibe, but book ahead in peak surf season.

FAQ

May to October — the swell is most consistent then.
The northern end of the main beach, near the lagoon mouth, is the calmer option; the southern surf zone at Main Point has strong rip currents during the May-Sep swell season, so it is for surfers rather than swimmers. Lifeguard coverage is minimal.
Peanut Farm and Baby Point are gentle; Main Point is for experienced surfers only.
Roughly May to October, when the southwest monsoon drives clean swell to the east coast; the biggest and most crowded waves are in July and August, while May-June and September-October are cleaner and quieter.
May to September for surf and dry weather on the east coast.
Buses from Colombo, Kandy and Batticaloa run to Pottuvil, about 4 km north of the bay; from there it is a short tuk-tuk ride. The bay is about 320 km east of Colombo.
