Pottuvil Beach
About Pottuvil
Pottuvil is the market town and transport hub of the Arugam Bay area, about four kilometres north of the surf village at the northern end of the same beach. It is a working, Muslim-majority town where buses from Colombo and Batticaloa terminate and the streets hold markets, tea shops and everyday trade rather than surf-shop fronts. Its coastline is the widest stretch of sand dunes in Sri Lanka, an undeveloped dune field that continues south into Arugam Bay and partly buries the ruins of the ancient Muhudu Maha Viharaya monastery. The Pottuvil lagoon at the town's edge is known for boat safaris through mangroves where crocodiles, monkeys, water buffalo and many birds can be seen, and elephants reportedly cross the main road near the lagoon bridge most evenings. The quieter surf breaks of Whiskey Point and Pottuvil Point lie on its coast.

Reviews
Pottuvil suits travellers who want the working east coast rather than the surf-town strip: lagoon safaris, dune walks and a genuinely local market town. Come in the May-September dry season, and watch for elephants on the main road at dusk.
