About Back Bay
Back Bay is a small, sheltered bay tucked against the Fort Frederick headland in Trincomalee, on the navy-controlled side of the peninsula. Shallow and tranquil, it was noted in Dutch colonial records as too shallow for the East India Company's ships, and today it remains a working, local stretch of coast: fishing boats, nets and crews are part of the scene, and the navy has placed buoys to protect the fishermen's area. The water is calm by virtue of the surrounding deep-water harbour, and the setting is quietly atmospheric - minutes from Fort Frederick, Koneswaram Temple and the naval museum, yet far from the resort beaches north of town. There are no tourist facilities to speak of. Back Bay is for travellers curious about everyday Trincomalee coastal life rather than a classic beach day.
