Balapitiya sits where the Madu Ganga estuary meets the coast, and the beach here is a modest, workaday stretch of fishing boats, local life and a slower pace than Bentota to the north. The real draw is the water behind it: the Madu Ganga is a Ramsar-listed coastal wetland of mangroves and lagoon islands, said to number around 64, threaded by boat safaris that glide past cinnamon gardens, water monitors and the island temple of Kothduwa. Boats leave from jetties near the lagoon, and tours typically run one to two hours. The beach itself suits a walk and a swim in the calm dry-season sea, while the lagoon safari is the reason most visitors stop.
