About Clappenburg Bay

Clappenburg Bay sits on the southern shore of Trincomalee Bay (Koddiyar Bay), just south of Trincomalee on the road toward Kinniya and Batticaloa, in the area known as Clappenburg or Empricode. It is a scenic, largely undeveloped bay - an open shoreline along sheltered harbour water, overlooked by the hills near China Bay, and named for Clappenburg Island further out in the bay. Development is minimal: the most striking offshore sight is a cluster of oil rigs laid up at anchor, while the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has proposed a future shipyard and offshore-services hub here. There are no tourist facilities. It is a very local, raw coastline for shore walks and watching fishing and harbour traffic, best visited by those already exploring the Kinniya Road beaches such as Marble Beach.

Clappenburg Bay is for the curious: an undeveloped, harbour-side bay whose future as an offshore-industry hub is still being decided. There is little to do beyond shore walks and watching the laid-up rigs, so it suits travellers exploring the Kinniya Road. Visit in the dry season and check current conditions locally.
