About Dickwella

Dickwella is a laid-back coastal town on the A2 highway between Matara and Tangalle, fronted by one of the longest stretches of sand on Sri Lanka's south coast. The beach is wide, flat and largely uncrowded, with casual guesthouses and small hotels behind the sand rather than a resort strip. Surfers paddle out at the beach break in season, while the east end of the shoreline rises into sand dunes worth a walk at sunset. Inland, the Wewurukannala Vihara - an active temple famous for its giant seated Buddha, among the largest statues in Sri Lanka - is the town's headline sight. Turtles nest on the local sands, and a conservation hub operates at the beachfront Dickwella Resort & Spa. It is a practical, low-key base for exploring Hiriketiya bay, Talalla and the Dikwella area.

Dickwella is the workhorse beach of this stretch - long, open and far less crowded than the famous bays around it. It works best as a relaxed, affordable base, with the Wewurukannala temple and Hiriketiya bay both within easy reach.

The famous horseshoe bay is only a short tuk-tuk ride from Dickwella town - visit early to beat the crowds.

The water is calmest between November and April; from May to September the southwest monsoon makes the sea rough.

FAQ

The Wewurukannala Vihara, an active temple famous for its giant seated Buddha statue - among the largest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka - sits a short drive inland from the town.
Generally yes in the Nov-Apr dry season, when the water is calm. During the southwest monsoon (May-Sep) the sea is rougher with stronger currents, so swimming is not advised.
Sea turtles nest on the local sands, and a turtle conservation hub operates at the beachfront Dickwella Resort & Spa; sightings are seasonal, so check locally.
