About Dondra

Dondra, also known as Devinuwara, marks the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, where the island's coastline runs out into the open Indian Ocean. The Dondra Head Lighthouse, a white octagonal tower built in 1890 and standing about 49 m tall, is one of the tallest lighthouses in Asia and commands sweeping views over a wild, windswept shoreline of open sand and rocky outcrops. The sea here is deep and rough, with strong currents, and the beach is not set up for swimming - this is a place for the view, the light and the sense of land's end. During the whale-watching season, boats out of Mirissa and Weligama pass these waters on their way to deeper feeding grounds, and the headland is a good vantage point for the passing traffic.

Dondra is not a beach for swimming or sunbathing - it is a headland attraction, best for travellers who want Sri Lanka's southernmost point and the dramatic Dondra Head Lighthouse. Go in the dry season for clear views, ideally late afternoon for the light. The lasting image is the white tower against the wild Indian Ocean swell.
