About Elephant Rock
Elephant Rock is the landmark surf break at the southern edge of Arugam Bay, named for the elephant-shaped rock offshore. It is one of the area's most powerful and famous waves - a shallow reef and rock break that is the preserve of experienced surfers and is not a swimming beach. From the rock there are sweeping views over the coast and jungle, and wild elephants are regularly seen in the surrounding scrub, especially at dawn and dusk. Behind the beach, the Heda Oya lagoon is crocodile habitat, where a fatal attack on a British tourist was reported in September 2017; guides advise visiting in a group and staying clear of the waterway. Reached by tuktuk in about 20 minutes from Arugam Bay town, there is little infrastructure beyond a local shack with drinks and board rentals.
