Rumassala Hill, ~1 km from Unawatuna: 20-min jungle walk, walk down from trailhead parking, or ~10-min boat ride.

About Jungle Beach

Jungle Beach is a small golden-sand cove, roughly 400 m long, pressed between the forested slopes of Rumassala Hill and the sea, about 1 km from Unawatuna. Dense jungle encloses it on three sides, which is exactly how it earned its name. There is no road to the sand: visitors hike in about 20 minutes from Unawatuna, walk down from the trailhead, or take a short boat ride. The reward is a calm, reef-sheltered bay with excellent near-shore snorkelling - green turtles graze seagrass meadows, and visibility can exceed 15 m on calm days. Facilities are minimal: a single beach-shack cafe serves rice and curry, drinks and snorkel hire. Weekday mornings are quiet, but day-trippers fill the cove at weekends and in high season. The surrounding Rumassala sanctuary is the hill that legend says Hanuman dropped from the Himalayas.

Jungle Beach rewards the effort: superb near-shore snorkelling in a genuinely peaceful, jungle-backed cove. It is best for travellers who want a quieter, wilder swim than Unawatuna's main bay and do not mind basic facilities. Go early on a weekday in the dry season, and bring your own water and repellent.

FAQ

Three ways: a roughly 20-minute jungle walk from Unawatuna beach, a drive to the trailhead followed by a downhill walk (paid parking about 100-150 LKR), or a short boat ride from Unawatuna.
Yes - the near-shore reef is healthy and close to the sand, with tropical fish and green turtles; visibility can exceed 15 m on calm days.
It is much quieter than Unawatuna's main beach, but day-trippers do fill the cove at weekends and in high season - go early on weekdays for near-solitude.
