About Kabalana

Kabalana is a village and beach on the A2 coastal road a few minutes' tuk-tuk ride from Ahangama, on the stretch between Ahangama and Midigama. The beach is a long, wide run of gold-tinged white sand, noticeably less crowded than Weligama or Hikkaduwa, with roughly 50 m of shallow water near the shore and beach restaurants, daybeds and surf camps behind the sand. Surfing is the main draw, at two spots: a soft sandy beach break for learners and, at the southern end, The Rock (Kabalana Main Surf Point), a famous A-frame reef break over a rocky boulder that produces lefts and rights with rides of up to 400 m and waves to about 10 ft on big days. It is one of the few Sri Lankan beaches where beginners and advanced surfers share the same stretch, and its soft shore break also suits families.

Kabalana is the pick of the surf belt for variety - a learner-friendly sandy beach and one of Sri Lanka's best A-frame reefs (The Rock) within a few hundred metres of each other, with a fraction of the crowds of Weligama. Come in the dry season (November-April) to surf, sunbathe and eat well without the south coast's busiest scenes.
