Kalkudah Beach
About Kalkudah
Kalkudah is the long, low-key stretch of sand that runs south from the sheltered Passekudah (Pasikuda) bay, about 34 km north of Batticaloa. Roughly 4 km of soft sand is lined with coconut palms, with a single track leading in past small resorts and coconut estates where village cows occasionally wander the shoreline. Quieter and more remote than its famous neighbour, with few stalls, it rewards travellers who want an empty beach, sunrise walks and slow days over watersports. The water is calm and shallow, though sources describe it as better for wading than serious swimming. Budget guesthouses sit inland on the Valaichchenai-Kalkudah road, a five-bedroom boutique hotel opened in 2025, and lively fish and produce markets are a short drive away in Valaichchenai and Oddamavadi.

Reviews
Kalkudah is Pasikuda's quiet neighbour, best for travellers who want a long, near-empty beach with a local, rural rhythm rather than resort amenities. It suits couples, slow travellers and families happy to wade rather than swim. Go in the May-September dry season and get up before dawn for the sunrise.
