About Kallady (Batticaloa)

Kallady is Batticaloa's town beach, an open stretch of soft sand at the mouth of the Batticaloa Lagoon, just across the historic Kallady Bridge. Built in 1924 and long Sri Lanka's longest iron bridge, the old bridge is now pedestrian-only while traffic uses a modern span. This is a working, local beach: fishermen haul their nets ashore at dawn, families gather near Saravana Road at weekends, and stalls sell snacks and king coconut. From about 5.30 am the sunrise is the daily show, and a 4 km walk south along the sand reaches Navalady, where the lagoon finally meets the sea. The sea can be rough, and swimming is for strong swimmers only. Come for local life, the legendary singing fish of the lagoon at night, and the nearby Thiruchentoor temple - not for resort-style beaches.

Kallady is an authentic local beach rather than a holiday destination: best as a sunrise stop, an evening walk or a base for the Kallady Bridge and singing fish legend. Swimming is limited and there is little tourist infrastructure. Pair it with a morning in Batticaloa town for the full local experience.

From about 5.30 am you can watch the sunrise and see fishermen pull their nets ashore; they are often happy to let visitors help.
▲10▼
Walk to Navalady · 1 month ago
A roughly 4 km walk along the sand ends at the estuary where the lagoon meets the sea.
▲10▼
Listen for the singing fish · 1 month ago
On quiet nights, press a wooden pole or oar to your ear from Kallady Bridge to pick up the vibrations; conditions are reportedly best from March to August.
▲10▼
Dress modestly · 1 month ago
This is a local, culturally conservative beach, so wear a t-shirt and shorts or bermudas while bathing.

FAQ

Only if you are a strong swimmer - the sea can be rough, there are no lifeguards, and currents are reported, especially where the lagoon meets the sea at Navalady.
A legendary musical hum said to rise from the lagoon at night, best heard from Kallady Bridge on quiet evenings (roughly March to August). Two priests recorded the sound under the bridge in 1954 and it was broadcast on Radio Ceylon in the 1960s; no conclusive scientific explanation has been found.
About 4 km south, the sand reaches Navalady, the tip of the peninsula where the Batticaloa Lagoon finally opens into the sea - a dramatic estuary viewpoint.
