About Kirinda

Kirinda is a remote fishing village on Sri Lanka's dry southeast coast, where a wild, undeveloped beach meets the legend of Queen Viharamahadevi. According to folklore she was set adrift from Kelaniya and washed ashore here, and the Kirinda Viharamahadevi temple - a modern stupa on a rocky outcrop above the beach - marks the spot, with views over the sea, sand dunes and fishing harbour. The beach is a long stretch of fine sand with granite boulders, often nearly empty, backed by dry-zone scrub rather than palms. Waves can be turbulent and swimming is not recommended, but the coast is documented marine turtle nesting habitat, and the Great and Little Basses reefs offshore draw divers. Kirinda lies about 10 km south of Tissamaharama, minutes from the Yala and Bundala park entrances, and beach stays are the main draw.

  • Kirinda Viharamahadevi temple on the rocky outcrop above the beach
  • Legendary landing place of Queen Viharamahadevi

  • Coast documented as marine turtle nesting habitat
  • Minutes from Yala and Bundala national park entrances

Kirinda is for travellers who want wild, empty coast and local life rather than easy swimming - a rough-water beach under a temple rock, with turtle nesting habitat and safari country minutes away. Best in the dry season (Nov-Apr), it works brilliantly as a quiet base for Yala and Bundala. The sight to remember is the stupa silhouetted above the surf at sunrise.

10
Pair it with a safari · 3 days ago
Kirinda is minutes from the Yala and Bundala park gates - use it as a quiet base for early-morning safaris.
10
Climb the temple rock · 3 days ago
Paved steps lead to the stupa with wide views over the sea, dunes and harbour; the temple also sheltered people during the 2004 tsunami.
10
Catch sunrise or sunset · 3 days ago
The light over the rocks and temple is the beach's finest moment; arrive early to see fishing boats launch.
10
Dive the Basses reefs · 3 days ago
The offshore Great and Little Basses reefs offer coral, shipwrecks and lighthouses - arrange a boat and dive when currents allow.
