Koggala Beach
About Koggala
Koggala is a small coastal town with one of the longest beaches in Sri Lanka: roughly 4 km of golden sand on the open Indian Ocean, backed in places by a calm parallel lagoon and the runway of the former RAF Koggala airfield. The beach is wild rather than resort-like - no bars, loungers or tourist infrastructure, just fishing outriggers on the sand and strong, unlifeguarded surf, which makes the lagoon side the safer place to swim. Behind the beach, Koggala Lake offers boat trips among eight small islands, including the mangrove island of Madol Doova, a cinnamon island and the Kathaluwa temple island. The town is also home to the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum and a small domestic airport with a remarkable WWII flying-boat history. Quiet and relatively uncluttered compared with Unawatuna, it suits travellers after solitude and working coastal life.

Reviews
Koggala is a beach for walkers, photographers and travellers who want the south coast without the tourist machine - 4 km of golden sand that is often nearly empty. It is not a swimming beach, so come for the solitude, the fishing boats and the lake excursions, ideally between November and April.
