Kosgoda is a long, quiet beach on the southwest coast, best known for the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, one of Sri Lanka's oldest hatcheries, founded in 1981. The beach itself is a broad stretch of sand with a relaxed, low-built shoreline of guesthouses and small hotels, while the five-star Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort is the notable newcomer on the strip. Five of the seven sea turtle species found in Sri Lankan waters nest on these sands, and the hatchery's tanks hold rescued eggs and hatchlings; night visits during nesting season are a highlight. The water is calm in the dry season, the sunsets are long, and the turtle project makes it a natural stop for families travelling between Bentota and Ambalangoda.
