Kuchchaveli Beach
About Kuchchaveli
Kuchchaveli is a fishing hamlet on the east coast about 35 km north of Trincomalee, beyond Nilaveli, reached along the B424 coast road. The shoreline here is quiet and largely undeveloped: a long beach of shifting pale sand backed by scrub, coconut palms and rocky outcrops, with few buildings and almost no tourist infrastructure. A notable landmark is the Samudragiri Pichchamal Viharaya beach temple, perched on a rocky promontory known as Karandi Malai, with an ancient stupa and a 6th-century inscription. Currents make the open beach unsafe for swimming, although a small sheltered cove below the temple offers calm water. The main accommodation is the eco-luxury Uga Jungle Beach resort, set on a forested spit between the sea and Periyakarachchi lagoon. Sea turtles, rays and reef sharks are reported in these waters. It is a remote, genuinely local stretch for those seeking solitude.

Reviews
Kuchchaveli rewards travellers who want the east coast before tourism - empty beaches, a lagoon-backed coast and a cliff-top temple, but little else. It is not a swimming beach except in the sheltered cove, so treat it as a day of walking and local life, best from May to September. The 6th-century temple site is the surprise highlight.
