About Madiha

Madiha is a compact surf beach just west of Matara town, tucked along the A2 coast road between Polhena and Weligama. The main break, Madiha Right, is a consistent right-hand reef wave that works through much of the surf season, with a left-hand break at the other end of the bay. The beach itself is low-key: a handful of surf lodges and camps such as Tailslide Surf House, a few guesthouses and cafes, and little else, which keeps it noticeably quieter than Weligama a few kilometres west. The swell lines that power the break come straight in off the Indian Ocean, and the water over the reef is not suited to casual swimming. It suits surfers, and travellers who want a relaxed, local-feeling base near Matara.

  • Consistent right-hand reef break, Madiha Right, plus a left at the bay's other end
  • Quieter and less developed than Weligama, a few kilometres west
  • Surf lodges and camps including Tailslide Surf House
  • Just west of Matara town on the A2 coast road
  • Relaxed local feel with few other attractions
  • Works through much of the Nov-Apr surf season

Madiha is for surfers who want a consistent reef wave without the Weligama circus, and for travellers who prefer a laid-back local base over a party town. The surf is most reliable through the Nov-Apr season. The memory that sticks is watching a clean right-hander peel down the reef with the Matara headland behind it.

Travel tips

10
Check the surf forecast · 3 days ago
The breaks are swell-dependent; mornings are typically cleanest before the sea breeze builds.
10
Respect the reef · 3 days ago
The break is shallow over coral, so a reef-safe board and fins are wise, and watch the tide.
10
Stay local · 3 days ago
The surf lodges run lessons and board hire, and their cafes are the social hub of the beach.

FAQ

The reef breaks are better for intermediate surfers; beginners are usually directed to the gentler white-water waves at Weligama or Polhena's sandy sections.
The water over the reef break is not suitable for casual swimming; it is a surf beach first. Sandy sections exist but the swell is real.
Madiha is just west of Matara town on the A2, between Polhena and Weligama - about a short tuk-tuk ride from the town centre.
