About Midigama

Midigama is a small, unpolished fishing village squeezed between the railway, the A2 road and the sea, on the coast between Ahangama and Weligama. Its reef-edged shoreline is not a classic swimming beach; it is one of the south coast's most famous surf zones, packing five distinct reef breaks - Lazy Left, Lazy Right, Plantations, Coconuts and the powerful Ram's Right - into roughly 6 km of coast, widely described as the highest density of quality waves on the south coast. Lazy Left is a long, forgiving left over reef often called the ideal first reef break; Ram's Right is a hollow, barrelling right for advanced surfers. Surf schools, board hire and budget guesthouses line the road, stilt fishermen pose in the shallows, and the village keeps an authentically local rhythm - with no ATMs and very few tourist trimmings.

  • ✓Five reef breaks in ~6 km: Lazy Left, Lazy Right, Plantations, Coconuts and Ram's Right
  • ✓Lazy Left - a long left over reef, the classic first reef break for improvers
  • ✓Ram's Right - hollow, barrelling right for advanced surfers (shallow reef, sea urchins)
  • ✓Authentic fishing-village atmosphere with budget guesthouses from ~$10 a night
  • ✓Surf schools and board rental right on the beach
  • ✓Stilt fishermen staged along the road (tip expected for photos)
  • ✓No ATMs in the village - nearest in Ahangama or Weligama

Midigama is a surfer's village first and a beach second - five reef breaks within walking distance, an authentic local rhythm and prices well below the trendier towns either side. Best for intermediate and advanced surfers from November to April; non-surfers should use Weligama Bay or head for sandier beaches.

Travel tips

Bring reef booties · 1 month ago
The reef breaks are shallow and sea-urchin covered - booties are essential, and most local surfers wear them.
▲10▼
Cash and supplies · 1 month ago
There are no ATMs in Midigama; bring cash or withdraw in Ahangama or Weligama.
▲10▼
Early morning · 1 month ago
Surf two or three breaks in one morning session before the afternoon onshore breeze builds.
▲10▼
Stilt fishing etiquette · 1 month ago
The stilt fishermen along the road are staged for visitors - expect to tip roughly 500 LKR if you photograph them.

FAQ

Not really - the breaks are reef breaks. Beginners should use Weligama Bay about 10 minutes away; Lazy Left is the best 'first reef break' for confident improvers.
Lazy Left for long mellow lefts (low tide), Lazy Right as the mellowest, safest reef, Plantations and Coconuts for intermediates, and Ram's Right for advanced surfers wanting hollow barrels - wear reef booties at all of them.
November to April, with January-March the most consistent for swell and offshore winds; the south-west monsoon (May-October) brings chaotic, less rideable surf.
