About Mihiripenna

Mihiripenna is a small, sheltered cove between Unawatuna and Talpe, about 5 km south of Unawatuna on the A2 road. Soft golden sand meets calm, clear turquoise water that is sheltered by barrier rocks, and a natural rock pool at the shore is popular with children. The cove's biggest draw is its beachfront seafood restaurants - fresh fish and crab feature on menus along the sand, including a well-known crab spot - and the golden late-afternoon light makes it a sunset favourite. Offshore, the reef edge offers easy snorkelling among corals, reef fish and sea turtles, which come close to shore especially in the morning and evening. Snorkel gear can be hired on the beach. Quieter than Unawatuna, Mihiripenna suits a relaxed seafood lunch followed by a swim, and is easily combined with Dalawella on the same trip.

Mihiripenna is a relaxed, family-friendly cove built around two pleasures: long seafood lunches at the beachfront restaurants and easy snorkelling on the reef edge. It is a good middle ground between busy Unawatuna and the quieter coves to the east. Visit in the dry season and stay for the golden light of late afternoon.
