Oluvil Beach
About Oluvil
Oluvil is a working fishing town on Ampara's east coast, about 12 km south of Kalmunai, where the beach is part of everyday harbour life rather than a resort scene. Fishing boats crowd the shore and Oluvil Harbour - a commercial and fishery port built with Danish assistance under the Nagenahira Navodaya programme - dominates the waterfront; after nearly a decade of closure it was dredged and reopened in August 2022. The 24-metre Oluvil Lighthouse, opened in 1999 as the first lighthouse built after independence, stands nearby. It is a genuinely local place: the main campus of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka is in town, and a mosque and market anchor daily life. Come for authentic coastal Sri Lanka, fresh fish and harbour bustle, not for swimming.

Reviews
Oluvil is for travellers who want to see a real east-coast fishing town rather than a picture-postcard beach: harbour life, fresh fish and a lighthouse, with almost no tourism infrastructure. Visit in the dry season, be respectful around working boats, and pair it with nearby Kalmunai.
