About Panama
Panama is a remote coastal village about 12 kilometres south of Arugam Bay, the last populated settlement on this stretch of the Ampara coast before the wilderness of Kumana begins. Its beach is wide, sandy and usually almost empty - a long, undeveloped strand backed by sand dunes and low scrub, with fishing boats pulled up on the sand and no stalls, sun loungers or lifeguards. Inland, the Panama lagoon and wetlands hold birds and crocodiles, and the village is the gateway to the Kudumbigala forest monastery, a roughly 2,000-year-old Buddhist hermitage with more than 200 rock caves about 11-14 kilometres away, and to the Kumana National Park bird sanctuary that begins just south of the village. Predominantly Sinhalese and once the capital of the old Panamapattu region, Panama keeps a slow, traditional rhythm that suits travellers seeking real solitude.
