About Polhena

Polhena is a small, reef-sheltered bay on the western edge of Matara town, shielded from the open Indian Ocean by an offshore coral reef that keeps its water shallow, clear and calm. It is one of the safest swimming beaches on the south coast and is popular with local families, especially on weekends. The reef lagoon is a dependable spot for snorkeling, where green and hawksbill turtles are frequently seen, and the reef itself is a recognised local dive site. A coconut fringe backs the sand, with guesthouses, restaurants and small hotels nearby, and sunsets draw an evening crowd. It is the beach of choice for weak swimmers and children in the Matara area, trading dramatic surf for gentle, protected water.

Polhena is the pick of the Matara-area beaches for families and weak swimmers, with reef-calm water that makes snorkeling and paddling effortless. Weekdays are peaceful; weekends bring local families. The moment to remember is drifting over the reef as a turtle glides past in the clear shallows.
