Uppuveli Beach
About Uppuveli
Uppuveli is the beach closest to Trincomalee town, about 5-6 km north along the Nilaveli Road, on the same calm stretch of coast as its better-known neighbour Nilaveli. Its roughly 3 km arc of pale sand faces clear, turquoise water with gentle, swimmable waves in the east coast season. Originally a quiet fishing area, it is now the most popular place to stay in Trincomalee: guesthouses and small hotels line the sand and the lanes behind it, alongside beachfront cafes, seafood restaurants and evening bars. Local fishing boats still come and go along the shore, and boats leave from the beach for Pigeon Island snorkeling, dive trips and seasonal whale watching. Shallow water, easy access from town and a low-key backpacker scene make it a practical, sociable base - livelier than Nilaveli, far calmer than the south coast resorts.

Reviews
Uppuveli is the smart base for exploring Trincomalee - close to town, calm water and the liveliest stretch of cafes and guesthouses on this coast. It is best from May to September, when the sea is calm. Come for a beachfront bar in the evening and an early-morning boat to Pigeon Island the next day.
