Arippu Beach
About Arippu
Arippu is a quiet, history-laden beach on the north-west coast of Mannar Island, watched over by the crumbling ramparts of Arippu Fort - built by the Portuguese in 1659 and later used by the Dutch and British as a base for the island's pearl fishery. Below the fort a broad, calm strand runs along the shore where local fishermen still launch their boats. Nearby, the Doric Bungalow, a British-era residence from the early 1800s, and its roofless ruins recall the days when Arippu was the headquarters of the annual pearl harvest. It is an uncommercialised, almost empty beach: the attractions are the colonial ruins, the sunset light and the stillness, not beach facilities. This is a beach for slow travellers and history lovers rather than swimmers.

Reviews
Arippu is the most atmospheric stop on Mannar's coast: a lonely Portuguese fort, a calm beach and the ghosts of the pearl fishery. Best for history lovers and slow travellers, especially at sunset; combine it with the Doric Bungalow for the full story.
