Keerimalai Beach
About Keerimalai
Keerimalai, on the coast a short way north of the Karainagar causeway, is a sacred bathing site rather than a classic beach. The attraction is a natural pool fed by springs and edged by rocks, separated from the sea and used for centuries by pilgrims; steps lead into the clear water. Above the pool stands Keerimalai Naguleswaram temple, one of Sri Lanka's oldest Shiva shrines and the northernmost of the island's five ancient Iswarams, which legend says was built by a Pandyan prince after he bathed here. The shoreline itself is rocky with a small patch of sand, and the site draws local families and Hindu pilgrims, especially around festival days. After wartime damage the temple was rebuilt, and it remains a working, much-visited religious site.

Reviews
Keerimalai is less a beach and more a sacred coastal site: a spring-fed pool, an ancient Shiva temple and a legend that reaches back to a Pandyan prince. It suits pilgrims, history-minded travellers and anyone curious about Jaffna's Hindu culture. Combine it with Casuarina and Karainagar for a full day on the peninsula's west coast.
