About Casuarina

Casuarina is the Jaffna peninsula's best-known beach, spread along the west tip of Karainagar island and backed by a dense line of casuarina pines that give it its name. The sand is wide, pale and clean, shelving into clear water that stays gentle in the dry season, and the shade of the pine rows makes it a natural picnic spot. It is a weekend favourite for Jaffna families, who arrive for the day with food and blankets, so expect a busy, sociable scene on Sundays and a quieter one midweek. A handful of local restaurants sit near the access road, and the Karainagar fort area and naval facilities are a short ride away. For visitors based in Jaffna town, it is the easiest proper beach to reach and the standard day-out choice.

Casuarina is the beach to visit if you only see one in Jaffna: the widest, cleanest sand on the peninsula, easy access and a genuinely local weekend scene. Go midweek for space, or on a Sunday to feel the Jaffna family-day-out atmosphere. The casuarina-lined shore and calm dry-season water are the memorable part.

Travel tips

▲10▼
Go early on weekends · 1 month ago
Jaffna families arrive for the day on weekends; come before mid-morning to get a good shaded spot under the pines.
▲10▼
Bring a picnic · 1 month ago
The pine shade is the best amenity - pack food and water, though a few local restaurants sit near the access road.
▲10▼
Combine with the fort · 1 month ago
Fort Hammenhiel, a short ride from the beach, pairs naturally with a Casuarina day trip.
