About Karainagar

Karainagar is a low island off the west coast of the Jaffna peninsula, joined to the mainland by a causeway and reached along the road that ends at Casuarina Beach. Life here is quiet and coastal: fishing boats, village houses, coconut palms and the wide beaches of the island's west shore. Its big landmarks are military and colonial: the Sri Lanka Navy keeps a presence, and the small 17th-century Fort Hammenhiel rises from the shallows between the island and the mainland. Built by the Portuguese and later held by the Dutch, the fort served time as a prison before becoming a heritage resort, and it is the main reason travellers stop. Karainagar suits visitors who want a slow, local day out from Jaffna rather than a developed beach resort.

Karainagar is a quiet island day-trip rather than a resort destination, best for travellers curious about Jaffna's coastal life and its Dutch-Portuguese past. The causeway crossing, fishing villages and the dramatic Fort Hammenhiel in the shallows are the highlights. Pair it with Casuarina Beach and the Keerimalai springs for a full west-coast loop.
