Dambakola Patuna Beach
About Dambakola Patuna
Dambakola Patuna, also known as Sambalturai or Sambilithurai, is an ancient port site on the north coast of the Jaffna peninsula, where the shoreline opens onto shallow, calm water. Its place in history is Buddhist: this is the traditional landing point of the Bo-tree sapling that Arhat Sangamitta Theri brought from India in the 3rd century BC, which was carried south to Anuradhapura and planted as the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi. A temple on the shore, the Dambakola Patuna Sangamitta Temple, marks the landing and holds a Bo tree of its own, and the site draws pilgrims and history-minded travellers. The beach itself is simple and undeveloped, with sand, fishing boats and an exposed feel, and it stays quiet compared with Casuarina.

Reviews
Dambakola Patuna is a pilgrimage and history stop on a quiet stretch of the north coast, best for travellers who want Jaffna's Buddhist heritage rather than a swimming beach. The temple and its story - the Bo-tree sapling landing in the 3rd century BC - are the reason to come. Combine it with Kankesanthurai and Keerimalai on a north-coast day loop.
