Chundikulam Beach
About Chundikulam
Chundikulam is less a single strand than a wild sweep of north-coast shoreline inside Chundikulam National Park, declared in 2015 and reached off the A9 highway between Jaffna and Kilinochchi. The coast here is windswept and barely developed: broad sand flats and dunes give way to salt flats and the Chundikkulam lagoon, which draws large numbers of migratory waterbirds - flamingos, pelicans, ducks and herons among them - through the wet months. The park also holds elephant herds, and dugongs and dolphins are reported in the surrounding Palk Bay waters. With no visitor facilities and sandy tracks that need a 4WD, this is a place for birdwatchers and wildlife travellers rather than swimmers. Almost nobody else will be there.

Reviews
Chundikulam rewards birdwatchers and wildlife travellers willing to put up with remoteness and dust; the migrant bird spectacle through the wet months is the draw. Not a swimming beach - go for the flamingos, dunes and empty horizon, ideally with a hired 4WD from Jaffna or Kilinochchi.
