Kankesanthurai, usually just KKS, is the port town on the Jaffna peninsula's northeast coast, and its beach is an open, windswept stretch of sand below the old harbour. The ruined pier and the remnants of the old port give the shoreline a stark, photogenic character, and the town has real history: it was once a passenger port with links to southern India, and in 2023 a ferry service to Nagapattinam in India resumed after a gap of about 40 years, with a new passenger terminal opening the same year. The beach itself is local and undeveloped - no resort strip - with the KKS thermal power station and the road to Palali (Jaffna International) airport nearby. It suits travellers who want Jaffna's raw coastal life and a landmark pier rather than swimming.
