About Point Pedro

Point Pedro, at Sri Lanka's northernmost tip, is the end of the road and the end of the island: a wide, open, windswept beach where the Jaffna peninsula runs out into the Palk Strait, with India lying just across the water. The town around it is a working fishing and trading centre - one of the peninsula's busiest markets fills the mornings, and catamarans and trawlers crowd the shore. The white Point Pedro Lighthouse stands near the coast as the area's landmark. The beach itself is local and uncommercialised: no resorts, no beach bars, just sand, strong winds and a horizon broken by fishing boats. Swimming is limited by the exposed conditions, especially when the northeast monsoon whips up the sea between October and January. Suits curious travellers ticking off the island's northern end.

  • Sri Lanka's northernmost point
  • Views across the Palk Strait toward India
  • Point Pedro Lighthouse, the town's white landmark
  • Busy local market in the town
  • Working fishing harbour with catamarans and trawlers
  • Wide, windswept, undeveloped beach
  • Strong winds year-round

Point Pedro is less a beach holiday than a visit to the end of Sri Lanka - a windswept shore, a lighthouse and a lively fishing town that few tourists reach. Best as a day trip from Jaffna in the dry season; the market and the lighthouse make it memorable even when the sea is too rough to swim.

FAQ

Yes - the town and its coastline mark the northernmost tip of the island, looking across the Palk Strait toward southern India.
The beach is exposed and windswept with no lifeguards, and the sea is roughest during the northeast monsoon (Oct-Jan), so swimming is best avoided in those months.
The Point Pedro Lighthouse, the busy morning market and the working fishing harbour are the main draws, along with the view north toward India.
